Spring Maths- Fractions and Area

Class: Year 4 - Ouse, Foss and Derwent Year: 2019 - 2020

We started our Spring Term by focusing on area and fractions. Here are some photos of some of things we have done. 

In Miss Toomer's and Mr Amarasinghe's class, we used fractions walls throughout our units to help us with our understanding of fractions, equivalent fractions, adding/subtracting fractions and comparing fractions. 

In Mrs Coleman and Mrs Raistrick's class we used cuiseniare rods  to help us with our understanding of fractions being part of a whole. We then looked at possible equivalent fractions. 

To find fractions of quanitities we used counters and either shared or grouped them to work out the answers. 

To introduce us to area, we were each given a certain number of post it notes. We created different rectilinear shapes thinking about two questions: Is the area smaller, larger or the same? Is the perimeter smaller, larger or the same?
