Science

Our vision for science at Winsford High Street

At Winsford High Street, we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at school and beyond. The science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. The children are given opportunities to put forth their own questions and enquiries, resulting in quality practical experiments which provide the basis for the rest of their science learning. Throughout the programmes of study, our children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills. We ensure that the ‘Working Scientifically’ skills are built-on and developed throughout children’s time at Winsford High Street so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently. As one of the core subjects, we give the teaching and learning of science the prominence it requires.

Our principles for science

  1. Our children can identify questions about their environment and have opportunities to investigate them by planning and conducting quality practical experiments which answer their questions.
  2. Our children understand that there are different types of enquiries and understand what it means to work scientifically.
  3. Our teachers are knowledgeable and confident when leading experiments and addressing misconceptions.
  4. Our teachers and children use appropriate scientific vocabulary with confidence.
  5. Our children understand that the values and ideas learnt in science link with a wide range of careers and disciplines.
  6. We champion the link between science and our understanding of everyday life.
