Background Information
At Winsford High street Primary, we want all our pupils to be inspired and love learning, to be confident in who they are and to leave us with the skills and knowledge to take on the next step of their school journey. We are committed to ensuring that every individual pupil is given the best possible chance of making excellent progress and to allow them to achieve their full potential. We believe that a 'social disadvantage' must not be allowed to be a barrier to a child's future.
Pupil Premium is an allocation of additional funding provided to schools to support specific groups of children who are vulnerable to possible underachievement. These include pupils who are entitled to free school meals, those looked after by the Local Authority and the children of armed service personnel. All schools are required to report on the amount of funding received and how this is being used. The impact of the funding should also be reported.

Applying for Free School Meals
Pupil Premium and Free School Meals
From the start of the 2026/27 academic year (September 2026):
✔️All children in households receiving Universal Credit will become eligible for Free School Meals. (Expanded Free School Meals)
✔️The current earnings threshold (approximately £7,400 per year) will remain for additional benefits such as Pupil Premium eligibility. (Targeted Free School Meals)
✔️ This is a significant expansion and is expected to make many more families eligible!
What this means for your child…
Cheshire West and Chester Council has confirmed that:
✔️From September 2026, any family receiving Universal Credit will be entitled to apply for FSM.
✔️Please note, families must apply through the council - entitlement is not automatic.
Why it is important to apply?
Applying for FSM is important because:
✔️ Your child will receive a free, nutritious meal each day at school
✔️ You could save around £450–£500 per child each year on lunches
✔️The school receives additional funding (Pupil Premium) for some eligible pupils, helping to provide extra support and opportunities.
✔️ Even if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 and already receives a universal free meal, registering for FSM remains essential if you are eligible.
What you need to do…
✔️ Apply for FSM if you are currently receiving Universal Credit, you do not need to reapply if have previously been eligible.
You can apply via Cheshire West and Chester Council:
• Online: https://www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/residents/education-and-learning/free-school-meals
- Targeted FSM, which continues to be based on the existing threshold, covering pupils in households in receipt of Universal Credit with annual household earnings of £7,400 or less.
- Expanded FSM, a new category covering pupils who do not qualify for targeted FSM, but who are in households receiving Universal Credit.
